The Chesapeake Custom Outdoor Sauna is a fully custom, Finnish-designed sauna handcrafted by Amish craftsmen and built for people who actually use saunas: families, athletes, and homeowners who care about longevity, performance, and gathering. Unlike prefab kits or one-size-fits-all builds, this model reflects the principles behind our custom outdoor saunas designed around real use, proper ventilation, and long-term durability.
This fully assembled outdoor sauna is available with a traditional wood-fired heater for buyers seeking a true wood burning sauna experience. The sauna fits up to 6 people (more if you utilize the lower bench).
At its core is a dedicated 8′ × 8′ sauna room, designed around authentic Finnish principles rather than mass-market shortcuts. The three-tier bench layout supports both solo recovery sessions and shared experiences, offering comfortable seating for up to six people without crowding.
Designed for Real Wet Steam (Löyly)
Most saunas on the market are essentially unventilated hot boxes. The Chesapeake sauna is different.
This sauna is purpose-built for true wet steam (löyly), following traditional Finnish sauna design from the ground up. Proper airflow, thermal mass, and bench geometry work together to create soft, enveloping heat — not harsh spikes that leave you drained.
The standard configuration includes the Finnish-made Narvi Stony 20 wood-fired stove, capable of reaching 160°F–220°F+. Typical heat-up time ranges from 40–60 minutes, after which the sauna maintains temperature exceptionally well thanks to the high thermal mass of the sauna stones.
The result is a deep, comfortable heat that lasts — session after session.
Bench Geometry That Fits the Human Body
The interior bench system is designed for comfort, posture, and proper heat stratification:
- Top bench: 25″ deep, allowing one person to lie fully flat
- Middle bench: 20″ deep
- Lower step bench: 8″ with an L-shaped 20″ section
- Vertical spacing: Approximately 18″ between benches
- Third-bench clearance: Optimized at 45″–49″ for most body types
This geometry ensures full-body heat exposure whether sitting upright or laying down — something prefab and barrel saunas consistently get wrong.
Intelligent Ventilation & Breathable Construction
Proper ventilation is the difference between a sauna that feels incredible and one that feels suffocating.
The Chesapeake sauna includes five adjustable ventilation points, strategically placed to:
- Introduce fresh air near the stove
- Circulate heated air through the body zone
- Exhaust excess heat and moisture during and after sessions
The wall system features Rockwool insulation, an aluminum vapor barrier, and a furring strip air gap behind the interior cedar. This allows the structure to breathe naturally.
No glue.
No VOC materials.
No trapped moisture.
The interior cedar decking floor is installed with slight spacing and integrated flashing, allowing water to drain freely beneath the sauna while promoting airflow and fast drying between sessions.
Exterior, Deck & Cooling Space
A 4′ × 8′ cedar cooling deck, framed with classic colonial-style railings, provides space to cool off between rounds, relax, or gather after sessions.
The sauna sits on an elevated 4×4 and 2× base platform, similar to a shed foundation, preventing ground moisture exposure and long-term water damage.
Built to Order. Delivered Fully Assembled.
Every Chesapeake sauna is built to order, with a typical lead time of approximately 6–10 weeks depending on customization and scheduling.
Every build follows a deliberate planning process that starts before fabrication and continues through delivery. Layout, ventilation, heater sizing, site access, and logistics are reviewed in advance to ensure the sauna performs correctly and arrives without surprises. You can see how this works step by step on our Our Process page.
The sauna is delivered fully assembled. During transport, the stove is secured inside the sauna using temporary framing. For wood-fired configurations, the chimney system is completed on site in roughly 30 minutes.
A gravel pad foundation with 4×4 framing can be created and included as part of the installation if needed.

Why Our Outdoor Sauna is Different
Most saunas sold today look similar on the surface but they are built for very different outcomes.
At Chesapeake Sauna, we design and build saunas the traditional Finnish way: for real wet steam, proper airflow, long-term durability, and enjoyable use year after year. This philosophy guides every decision we make, from framing and ventilation to bench height and material choice.
Below is what sets our saunas apart.
Designed for Real Finnish Sauna Use (True Löyly)
Our saunas are designed specifically for wet steam (löyly). The stoves we use are rated for it, and the entire structure interior, exterior, and airflow is engineered to support it. The result is soft, enveloping heat that feels restorative, not punishing.
A true sauna is not just a hot room.
Many modern saunas (especially those sold online) are essentially sealed hot boxes. They trap heat, lack proper ventilation, and create an environment that feels harsh, suffocating, and draining. Over time, these designs also trap moisture, leading to rot, odors, and premature failure.
If you want a true deep dive into the design aspects of sauna that matter, we recommend "Trumpkin's Notes on Building a Sauna". Our design is largely built upon what is recommended in this guide as well as some of our own customizations which we've learned to matter for sauna usability and longevity.
Proper Sauna Ventilation for Comfortable, Breathable Heat
Ventilation is the most misunderstood and most important part of sauna design. The above image details the adjustable ventilation port ~2' above the stove. This ventilation port is specifically designed to allow fresh air to be drawn into the sauna room and mix with the hot air rising off the stove, leading to an enjoyable mixture of hot and fresh air for sauna participants.
Every Chesapeake sauna includes five adjustable ventilation points, intentionally placed to:
- Introduce fresh oxygen near the heat source
- Mix hot air evenly throughout the body zone
- Remove excess heat and moisture during and after sessions
The diagram in the previous section details the five ventilation ports in purple.
This allows the sauna to breathe while in use and dry properly afterward. You feel better during the session and the structure lasts longer because moisture isn’t trapped where it shouldn’t be.
As Americans, we are often subject to saunas without proper ventilation. They are very common, especially in gyms across the country. The side effects of a "hot box" style sauna, which lacks ventilation, is a wooden box that fills with CO2 over time, leading to fatigue and a general unpleasant experience.
A properly ventilated sauna allows everyone to enjoy the experience. Proper ventilation is something paramount to our design because of how important it is for health benefits alongside general enjoyment of the experience.
Finnish Style Sauna Construction Built for Longevity
Our wall and ceiling assemblies are designed for performance and longevity, not speed of production.
- Solid 2×4 framing
- Rockwool insulation for heat retention and moisture resistance
- Aluminum vapor barrier
- Interior air gap using furring strips
- Cedar installed without glue or VOC materials
This layered, breathable approach mirrors traditional Finnish construction principles and avoids the long-term issues common in tightly sealed, synthetic builds.
Ergonomic Sauna Bench Design & Heat Stratification
Our bench layout isn’t decorative it determines how the sauna feels and performs.
Our three-tier bench system is designed around how heat stratifies and how people actually sit, stretch, and relax. The spacing, depth, and height are intentional, allowing bathers to naturally find their ideal temperature.
The top bench is deep enough for one person to fully lie down comfortably, while still accommodating shared sessions for up to three to four people on the top bench (depending on people's size). Overall, the sauna can comfortably fit six people altogether with the seating arrangement. This is a sauna meant to be used and not just looked at.
The top bench has a 25" depth and is ~46" from the ceiling. The second tier bench has a 20" depth while the third bench (lowest) is a 8" bench with an L-shaped portion that is a 20" depth, allowing for a lower bench seating area for children or those who enjoy a mild sauna or recovery time (this L-shaped bench portion also has the best view of the stove's firebox which is mesmerizing at night).
Sauna Materials Chosen for Performance, Not Marketing
We primarily use knotty cedar for our interiors not because it’s trendy, but because it’s practical, available, and visually honest. The knots are purely aesthetic and do not affect performance.
Our floors are cedar decking installed with slight spacing to allow water to drain naturally beneath the sauna. Flashing is integrated to direct moisture away from the structure, while airflow under the floor promotes drying between sessions.
Chesapeake Sauna owners can freely pour cups of water on themselves while inside of the sauna, knowing the sauna will properly drain and breathe due to our design.
And on top of that, we focus on maintaining the health benefits of sauna by sourcing our materials correctly. No glue. No unnecessary chemicals.
Our windows are bronzed 1/4" tempered glass which combines the beauty of a partially darkened window, the heat-resistant strength of tempered glass, and the ability to customize dimensions of the glass itself to your preference.
Fully Assembled Outdoor Sauna Delivery (No Kits, No Site Builds)
Every Susquehanna Sauna is handcrafted in the Mid-Atlantic by skilled Amish craftsmen using traditional building methods and materials chosen for longevity, not mass production.
These are not flat-packed kits or site-built assemblies.
Your sauna is built in full, transported as a complete structure, and delivered directly to your property ready to be placed, connected, and enjoyed. For saunas with a wood-fired stove, we install the last portion of exterior chimney pipe on site which takes ~15-30 minutes.
We regularly deliver fully assembled outdoor saunas throughout Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, and Virginia. Delivery availability and logistics depend on your specific location, access conditions, and site requirements, which we review during the design and planning phase.
The video below shows a real delivery of a fully assembled sauna arriving on site no boxes, no framing, no multi-week construction process. Just a finished sauna, built properly and delivered as one piece.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit for an outdoor sauna?
Permit requirements for an outdoor sauna vary by location, zoning rules, and how the structure is classified by local authorities. These considerations are reviewed during the planning phase.
Can this sauna be customized?
Every custom outdoor sauna is designed around your space, usage goals, and performance needs rather than a fixed template. Layout, bench configuration, ventilation, heater type, window sizing, exterior finishes, and overall footprint can all be adjusted. This approach ensures the outdoor sauna performs correctly for your property instead of forcing a one-size-fits-all design.
Is this better than a barrel sauna?
Barrel saunas prioritize visual simplicity but often compromise ventilation, bench height, and heat distribution. A custom outdoor sauna allows proper airflow, multi-level seating, and consistent heat stratification, resulting in a more comfortable and usable sauna experience. Long-term durability and moisture management are also significantly better in a properly constructed outdoor sauna.
How long does a custom outdoor sauna last?
A well-designed custom outdoor sauna can last several decades when built with proper ventilation, moisture-resistant materials, and breathable wall assemblies. Construction methods that allow the structure to dry between uses play a major role in long-term performance. This focus on durability separates a permanent outdoor sauna from short-lifespan prefab options.
What foundation is required for an outdoor sauna?
An outdoor sauna typically sits on a level gravel pad, concrete pad, or framed base similar to a shed foundation. The correct foundation depends on site conditions, access, drainage, and local requirements. These details are reviewed in advance so the fully assembled outdoor sauna can be placed securely and perform as intended. We offer a gravel pad built with 4x4 treated lumber included in our pricing.
Does an outdoor sauna work in winter climates?
Outdoor saunas are commonly used year-round in cold climates, including regions with snow and freezing temperatures. Proper insulation, ventilation, and heater sizing allow the sauna to reach and maintain temperature even in winter conditions. In many cases, cold weather enhances the overall outdoor sauna experience rather than limiting it. Our saunas are designed to work in all seasons of the year without issue.
How is a fully assembled outdoor sauna delivered?
A fully assembled outdoor sauna is built in its entirety and transported to your property as a complete structure. Delivery equipment, such as our shed mules and hydraulic shed delivery trailers, is used to position the sauna in place, eliminating on-site framing, insulation, or finish work. For wood-fired models, the final section of the chimney is completed on site in a short installation window.
What’s the difference between wood-fired and electric heaters?
Wood-fired sauna heaters provide traditional heat and steam with an active fire experience, while electric sauna heaters offer convenience and precise temperature control. Heater choice can affect heat-up time, ventilation design, and ongoing operation. Both options can be used effectively in a custom outdoor sauna when sized and installed correctly.
How long does it take the sauna to heat up?
Heat-up time for an outdoor sauna depends on heater type, sauna size, insulation, and ambient temperature. Wood-fired outdoor saunas typically reach operating temperature in 40–60 minutes, while electric models may vary based on power supply and heater output. Proper design ensures consistent heat once target temperature is reached.
